Ask Auburn
anything you want!
In Auburn, Alabama at the
James E. Foy Student Union, facing the front doors
on the second floor sits one of the more unique places
in the country. This long table hosts the Brain Center
for what was known as the Student Help Line, now
more commonly referred to as the Ask Auburn Line.
Since the 1950’s Auburn
University has been providing information by telephone
to its students, teachers, and locals, but with the
advent of the internet, Ask Auburn has become a national
phenomenon!

Concierge Magazine’s staff regularly uses Ask Auburn
as a fact checker (if we are too lazy to look things up)
or to solve even the most inane and trivial arguments where
facts are in dispute. Jason Lampton is a bartender in Houston
who first gave us this telephone number. “We use
it at the bar to award winning bets where facts are not
necessarily agreed upon,” Jason told us.
So, one day we TRIED the Ask Auburn line, and a very helpful
young man greeted us, and found the answer to our initial
question in less than 30 seconds. We tried again over the
following weeks, ALWAYS receiving the same courteous and
quick responses.
Justina White, a senior English major from Decatur, Alabama
answered our most recent call asking about the history
of the Help Line. “Usually we have 3-4 students working
at one time, and at least one supervisor,” she told
us recently. “The shifts are 2-3 hours, but most
people work two shifts to make it worth their time. We
get asked LOTS of strange questions, and sometimes people
get irritated if the answers are not what they wanted.”
The Ask Auburn line is answered 24 hours per day during
the fall and spring semesters, shorter hours during the
summer and breaks between semesters. So, no matter whether
you want to know who the wealthiest man in the history
of the world was, or what size was the largest tumor ever
removed from a human, Ask Auburn has the answers!
